Cheese POP & PGI
Cheese PDO and PGI
In Europe there is a variety of cheeses made with a special procedure and with a special taste, texture and aroma which play a significant role in the tradition of each region.
The European Union, despite the free circulation of goods, services and persons, having acknowledged each member state¢s diversity in costumes, traditions and nutrition, adopted Regulation 2081/192 on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs, which was replaced by Regulation 510/2006.
According to this Regulation, “Designation of Origin-PDO” means the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases, a country, used to describe an agricultural product or a foodstuff originating in that region, specific place or country, the quality or characteristics of which are essentially or exclusively due to a particular geographical environment with its inherent natural and human factors and the production, processing and preparation of which take place in the defined geographical area. “Protected Geographical Indication-PGI” means the name of a region, a specific place or, in exceptional cases, a country, used to describe an agricultural product or a foodstuff originating in that region, specific place or country, and which possesses a specific quality, reputation or other characteristics attributable to that geographical origin and the production and/or processing and/or preparation of which take place in the defined geographical area.
As far as cheese is concerned, the breeds of farm animals, the managing and breeding of animals, the soil and climatic conditions of the area along with the manufacturing method and ripening of cheeses, are the factors which make a cheese stand out and be part of a region¢s tradition.
The protection of designations of origin and geographical indications can be a growth driver for disadvantaged and remote areas, by incrementing the products¢ visibility and consequently the producers¢ incomes. At the same time, the protected designations of origin safeguard consumers for the products they buy.
